Description
The Infectious Disease Clinical Trial Development Grant Programme is requesting applications to support the development of innovative clinical trial ideas aimed at optimising licensed infectious disease interventions in low- and middle-income countries. The focus areas include mycobacterial infections such as tuberculosis and leprosy and infections caused by non-tuberculous mycobacteria along with bacterial infections including sexually transmitted infections and lower respiratory tract infections and bloodstream infections as well as invasive fungal infections and neglected tropical diseases such as dengue and leishmaniasis and schistosomiasis. They will provide funding of up to £200,000 per award for a duration of up to 24 months. The funding will cover a wide range of research-related costs including staff, materials, clinical research expenses, fieldwork, travel, public engagement, training and overheads. The research proposal must clearly outline the chosen disease area and intervention, provide a detailed work plan, and explain how the proposed research will contribute to future clinical trials. It should include plans for stakeholder and community engagement, data management and sharing, capacity building, and the development of a transdisciplinary team. Proposals should also demonstrate how the research can scale into a late-stage randomised controlled trial and align with global clinical trial best practices. Applicants must form a team of at least two members, including a lead applicant and one coapplicant, with both based in eligible regions and intending to remain there throughout the project duration. Teams should not exceed eight applicants and must include at least 50 percent of members based in Africa, South Asia or South-East Asia. The team should collectively possess expertise in clinical trial design, data analysis, partnership building and transdisciplinary collaboration, along with a clear commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive research environment. The lead applicant must be a mid-career or established researcher with proven experience in designing and conducting clinical trials, managing and analysing data, and leading large collaborative projects. They must be based at an eligible organisation in the specified regions and hold a long-term or permanent position for the duration of the award. Coapplicants can be at any career stage and from diverse disciplines, provided they play a significant role in the project. Collaborators may contribute expertise or resources but cannot receive salary support. The administering organisation must be located in Africa, South Asia or South-East Asia and should be capable of complying with the grant conditions and managing the awarded funds. Eligible organisations include higher education institutions, research institutes, healthcare organisations and non-profit research bodies.
