Title
Description
The International Brain Research Organization is inviting applications for its IBRO Exchange Fellowship Program to broaden the scope of their neuroscience training by conducting goal-directed laboratory visits. The fellowship supports international exchanges, meaning the host laboratory must be located in a different country from the home laboratory, and the exchange must begin in 2026. Grant recipients are required to submit the final report no later than three months after the exchange concludes. Funding is disbursed in two stages, with 80% released two months before the start of the exchange and the remaining 20% provided after completion and submission of the required report. Funds can be transferred to the grantee, their institution, or another person directly involved with the grant, such as a supervisor, with possible exceptions depending on circumstances. Applicants affiliated with institutions in Africa must use the grant alongside matching funds from the host laboratory to cover travel and living costs, and the exchange must last at least three months, with a maximum grant amount of 6,000 USD. In the Asia-Pacific region, two funding schemes are available. The Short Exchange plus Scientific Meeting option requires a minimum two-week laboratory visit and allows a maximum duration of four months, with a grant cap of 2,500 USD. The Classic Exchange option requires a four- to six-month exchange and offers a maximum of 8,000 USD. Applicants from Latin America must propose exchanges lasting at least four months, with funding available up to 7,500 USD. Applicants from the US/Canada region must also propose exchanges of at least four months, with a maximum grant amount of 8,000 USD. Across all regions, applicants have flexibility to apply for exchanges within or outside their region, and host laboratories are expected to contribute matching funds to support costs. Eligibility is limited to PhD neuroscience students and early career postdoctoral fellows who are within five years of the start of their initial postdoctoral experience. Applicants must currently reside in one of the eligible regions: Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Africa, or US/Canada, while those residing in Europe are directed to apply through the dedicated FENS/IBRO-PERC program. Regional eligibility is determined by IBRO’s country classification. Applications are evaluated based on scientific credentials, the quality of the research proposal, the quality and commitment of the host laboratory including matching funds, the strength of the reference letters, and the demonstrated benefit to the applicant and value to the home laboratory. The application process requires completion of an online form that includes applicant details, a list of grants received, a detailed research proposal, information about the exchange, a motivation and impact statement, and a detailed budget. Applicants must also submit an official host acceptance letter, at least one reference letter, and a copy of their CV. Reference requests are managed through the IBRO Grants Portal.
