Description
The Pulitzer Center is requesting applications for its Impact Seed Fund to support activities that enrich perspectives and knowledge on socio-ecological challenges, solutions and innovations related to rainforests, oceans, climate and labor crises within academic and school communities. The 2026 ISF Africa program focuses on several key themes, including transparency and governance; rainforest-related issues such as deforestation, protection, peatlands, and illegal logging; ocean-related topics including fisheries, deep-sea mining, ocean science, and shipping; as well as climate and labor concerns such as energy transition, the impacts of climate change, changes in the job landscape, and labor rights. The Africa ISF provides seed funding to educators and researchers to expand the impact of reportages produced by Pulitzer Center grantees and fellows. The initiative aims to increase awareness and understanding of urgent environmental, ocean, and climate challenges among academic communities and the wider public across the continent. By linking journalism with education, the program encourages deeper engagement with underreported global issues and inspires new perspectives and actions. Through this grant, applicants can initiate new collaborations or strengthen existing partnerships among teachers, researchers, students, and journalists. Projects are expected to encourage stronger connections between educational institutions, journalists, and local communities while promoting learning through creative and innovative formats. The program also supports the use of visual and multimedia storytelling tools such as comics, animated videos, photography, short videos, documentaries, podcasts, and data visualizations. These materials can be incorporated into teaching resources, classroom activities, curriculum development, and scientific publications to improve engagement and understanding of environmental reporting. Another key objective of the fund is to promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in educational activities and research outputs. Projects are encouraged to integrate inclusive teaching tools and highlight gender equality and disability considerations, particularly among young students and learning communities. Funding amounts vary depending on the thematic focus of the project. Grants of USD 2,500 to USD 4,000 are available for projects related to transparency and governance, while projects focusing on rainforests, oceans, and climate and labor can receive funding between USD 2,500 and USD 3,500. Applicants are required to submit a detailed budget outlining how the funds will be used. The project must center around stories supported by the Pulitzer Center and reported by grantees or fellows working on rainforest, climate and environment, transparency and governance, or ocean reporting initiatives. Activities must demonstrate a clear intended impact on academic communities such as students, lecturers, researchers, or civil society groups, and must be implemented in consultation with the relevant Pulitzer Center grantees or fellows. At the end of the grant period, recipients must submit financial and narrative reports describing project outcomes and expenditures. Applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria to apply for the grant. Eligible applicants are university lecturers based in selected African countries including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Gabon, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Namibia, Angola, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Senegal, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Burundi, Central African Republic, Guinea, and Mozambique.
