The Gerda Henkel Stiftung is inviting applications for its General Research Grant Program to support high-quality research projects and individual scholarships across the historical humanities. These programmes provide support for research projects in the following fields: Heritage Studies, Research in the History of Architecture, Conservation Studies, Cultural Studies, Political Science, Jurisprudence, Restoration Studies, Social Sciences. Support cannot be provided for projects and persons in the following fields: Medicine, Natural and Engineering Sciences, Psychology, Linguistics and Literature Studies, Drama or Film Studies, Economics. Smaller funding requests of up to 30,000 euros may be considered year-round through a shorter review process but follow the same application procedure. The Foundation provides grants for research projects covering personnel, travel, materials and other costs, with applicants required to be directly engaged in the research work. Scholarships are central to the funding model and may only be awarded to scholars conducting and publishing their own research, with simultaneous receipt of a salary or pension not permitted. Different scholarship tiers are available including PhD scholarships, research scholarships for postdoctoral researchers and advanced research scholarships for scholars who have completed habilitation or equivalent qualifications. These scholarships include fixed monthly amounts, family allowances for children under eighteen, overseas bonuses for extended research stays abroad and potential support for travel and material expenses based on the submitted budget. The Foundation also offers contracts for work for smaller research activities. Eligibility criteria include timelines since completion of the PhD, prior publication of the dissertation and the requirement that the proposed project must differ significantly from the doctoral topic. Researchers previously funded or rejected must also adhere to specific waiting periods before reapplying. Applications must be submitted electronically along with detailed documentation including a research description, cost plan, schedule, curriculum vitae, publication record, and supporting certificates. For applicants also seeking scholarships, requirements include letters of recommendation and academic certificates. Approved scholarships are disbursed monthly either directly to the researcher or through a third-party institutional account. Applications are assessed twice annually, with the next deadline for the 2026 autumn committee meeting set for May 28, 2026, and successful projects starting no earlier than December 2026.
