Description
The British Nutrition Foundation Drummond Early Career Scientist Award 2026 recognises outstanding early career nutrition scientists who demonstrate strong potential to become future leaders in the field. The award focuses on recognising contributions to nutrition science, assessing the scientific merit and clarity of communication in a submitted abstract, and evaluating applicants’ potential to become future leaders in human nutrition science; applicants are required to complete an application form and submit an abstract for an up-to-date mini review describing an emerging, topical area of human nutrition science suitable for submission to Nutrition Bulletin. The British Nutrition Foundation runs this annual scheme through its management of the Drummond Memorial Fund, which was established in memory of Sir Jack Drummond and his significant contributions to the field of nutrition. The award highlights excellence among early career scientists working across academia, policy, or industry. Applicants must submit an abstract that presents a concise and informative mini review on a current and emerging topic in human nutrition science. The proposed review should be appropriate for publication in Nutrition Bulletin, the official journal of the British Nutrition Foundation. Nutrition Bulletin serves as an international, peer-reviewed platform that connects stakeholders across universities, industry, government, research, healthcare, education, and media, publishing articles on recent developments and current thinking in human nutrition science. Eligibility for the award extends to students currently pursuing a postgraduate qualification in human nutrition or a related field, as well as individuals within three years of being awarded a PhD or within six years of being awarded an MSc if they do not hold a PhD. The relevant date for PhD eligibility is when thesis amendments were accepted and the degree awarded, excluding PhDs obtained by published work, while MSc eligibility is based on the date of receiving the transcript. Eligibility is determined in relation to the award’s launch date of 2 February 2026. Individuals who completed their PhD or MSc outside the standard eligibility timeframe may still qualify if they have taken formal time out for personal reasons such as maternity, paternity, adoption leave, or long-term ill health. Such cases are reviewed individually, and prospective applicants are advised to contact Emma Rowley at the British Nutrition Foundation to discuss their circumstances. Applications are welcomed from candidates in any country.
